Boyabat
is supposed to found in B.C. 600. The old name of the city is
Germanicopolis. Ghaska’s (Gaşka) is commonly predicted as a first
founder of the city. ‘Boy’ means length, clan, tribe and lineage whereas
‘abat’ refers to proud and being constructed. According to another rumor,
the city name means ‘long plain’. Boyabat, chronogically, was ruled by
Ghaska, Hittite, Paphlagonia, Lydia, Persian, Macedonia, Rome and
Byzantine. Boyabat region was integrated to the Turkish ruling by
Danishmend emperor Gümüş Tegin, following period of ruling under
Seljukian and Jandarids, finally in 1461, Mehmed the Conqueror’s era
Boyabat was integrated to Ottoman Empire. County was a administrative
district of Kadi (Muslim Judge) belongs to the Kastamonu Sanjak in
Ottoman Era. Boyabat was converted to district in Tanzimat Reform Era
and township in 1868. County has great numbers of worf of art inherited
from Ottoman Empire. Akmescit Mosque, ruined Madrasa now located in Çay
Street, Daylı Shrine, Aşıklı Tekke Shrine, Great Mosque, Bekir Paşa
Raceway etc. Having belonged to Sinop province in Republic Period,
county have been keeping on growing consistently.
GEOGRAPHİCAL POSİTİON
Boyabat has 1568 km2 surface area. It is surrounded by the cities
Durağan in the East, Hanönü-Taşköprü in the West,
Ayancık-Sinop-Gerze-Erfelek in the North and Saraydüzü- Kargı in the
South. Area was came into existince in 2th, 3rd and 4th geological times
and it is formed by high mountain systems. Besides, some rifts and flood
grikes draw attention. Kızılırmak’s tributary Gökırmak passes along the
county.
CLİMATE
County is located in Blacksea Region and reflects the characteristics of
marine climate. Summers are very hot whereas the winters are very cold.
Annually, precipitation days are 80, and rainfall is 300-400 mm. The
warmest months of the year are July, August, September, the coldest
months are January and February. The dominant wind is North-easter.
COMMERCE
The
goods manufactured by industrial enterprise (Soil Industry) have great
importance in county’s trade area. The Bazaar is opened two times weekly,
and has also great importance for county’s production circulation. As
Public and Private 5 banks take place in Boyabat, these are T.C. Ziraat
Bankası, Halk Bankası, Türkiye İş Bankası, Şekerbank and Akbank. Besides
County has Chamber of Industry and Commerce. There exists 20
Agricultural Development Cooperative, 22 Agricultural Irrigation
Cooperative, 63 Cooperative Housing Society, 2 Retail Society, 4 Motor
Vehicle Cooperative, 1 Small Industrial Area Cooperative, 1 Union of
Chamber of Merchants and Craftsmen.
POPULATİON
According to 2000 General Census, county’s population is as below.
Population density intensifies in fertile and water existing areas, and
the places close to the factories all over the county. Considering 2000
general census, total population 54.430, as 25.290 in county town and
29.140 in rural areas.
